Intrauterine Device (IUD)

 

The intrauterine device is a small plastic device that your doctor puts in your uterus. The IUD contains copper or hormones that prevents sperm from penetrating the egg, and prevents a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. Your doctor will insert it in the uterus the first days of the menstrual period and it can be left there between 1 to 10 years depending onthe type.

 

How effective is the IUD?

 

The intrauterine device is 97.4%-99.2% effective against pregnancy but it is NOT effective against sexually transmitted diseases. It's important to use always condoms to protect form STI.

 

What are the PROS and CONS?

 

PROS:

  • Nothing to put in place before intercourse
  • Copper IUD can be left in place for up to 10 years
  • No daily pill
  • Hormonal IUD may reduce menstrual cramps and can be left in place for one year

 

CONS:

  • May increase cramps
  • Spotting between periods
  • Heavier and longer periods
  • Increased chance of tubal infection for women who are at risk of infection from new partners, have more than one sexual partner or have a partner who has other partners. Tubal infection may lead to sterility
  • Rarely, wall of uterus is punctured
  • Pregnancies, that rarely occur, are more likely to be ectopic (in the fallopian tubes)
