Spermicide

Spermicide is a contraceptive foam, cream, jelly, film or suppository that is inserted deep into the vagina before intercourse. Spermicide immobilizes and kills sperm. Spermicides dissolve in the vagina.

How effective are spermicides?

Spermicides are 72%-97% effective.

What are the PROS and CONS?

PROS:

•   Easy to buy in drugstores, supermarkets, etc

•   Insertion may be part of foreplay

CONS:

•   Spermicide can be messy

•   Spermicide can irritate the vagina or penis and can set off allergies

•   It should be applied 5 to 30 minutes before intercourse.
